3rd Secret Drops Second Album

The rock supergroup 3rd Secret, consisting of members from Soundgarden and Nirvana, has quietly released their second album, The 2nd 3rd Secret. Following their grungy folk-inspired debut, this latest record features a touch of psychedelic influence.

3rd Secret is led by Kim Thayil and Matt Cameron from Soundgarden, along with Krist Novoselic of Nirvana. The album’s first single, “Ditch,” features Thayil’s signature grungy riffs and a closing solo that pays homage to the legendary Jimi Hendrix.

Formed in late 2021, 3rd Secret quickly gained attention for their remarkable lineup, which also includes Jon “Bubba” Dupree of Void on guitar, and vocalists Jillian Raye and Jennifer Johnson, who previously collaborated in the band Giants in the Trees. Additionally, Cameron and Dupree share a musical history in the band Hater.

On April 11, 2022, the band surprised fans with their self-titled debut album, featuring the lead single “I Choose Me.” This marked the first significant collaboration between Thayil and Cameron since the tragic passing of Soundgarden’s lead singer, Chris Cornell, in 2017. The album was engineered by the renowned Jack Endino. It was released as a surprise, following a secret performance at the Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle. Prior to the album’s release, Novoselic had hinted at a new project through a tweet in February 2022, generating excitement among fans.

The band shared insights on their website, revealing that they originally had plans for three separate albums, each featuring individual contributions from the band members. However, feeling impatient and eager to share their music, Krist and Jillian proposed the formation of 3rd Secret.

On June 22, 2023, 3rd Secret quietly dropped their second album, The 2nd 3rd Secret, without any social media announcements. Just a few days later, they released an official live video for the track “Ditch”.

The new record also features a vocal duet with Taylor Momsen of The Pretty Reckless and Matt Cameron on the song, “Gift From Above”. Both musicians are credited as composers.
