The Fast & Furious franchise is one of the most successful and popular in Hollywood history, with nine films that have grossed over $6 billion worldwide and spawned numerous spin-offs, video games, and merchandise. The series, which began in 2001 with The Fast and the Furious, has followed the adventures of Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his crew of street racers, who have evolved from outlaws to heroes over the course of the saga.

Now, the franchise is gearing up for its grand finale, with a two-part conclusion that promises to be the most epic and explosive yet. The first part, Fast X, is set to hit theaters on May 19th, 2023, and will reunite the original cast members, as well as introduce some new faces and old foes.

Fast X is directed by Louis Leterrier, who replaced original director Justin Lin, who helmed four previous films in the series. Leterrier is best known for his work on action films such as The Transporter, The Incredible Hulk, and Now You See Me. He brings his signature style and flair to the Fast & Furious universe, delivering stunning visuals and breathtaking stunts that will leave audiences on the edge of their seats.

The plot of Fast X is still shrouded in mystery, but the official synopsis reveals that Dom and his family are targeted by the vengeful son of drug kingpin Hernan Reyes (Joaquim de Almeida), who was killed by Dom in Fast Five. The son (Jason Momoa), is a ruthless and powerful criminal who will stop at nothing to avenge his father’s death.

To stop this new threat, Dom will have to rely on his family which includes his wife Letty Ortiz (Michelle Rodriguez), his sister Mia Toretto (Jordana Brewster), and his friends Roman Pearce (Tyrese Gibson), Tej Parker (Ludacris), Ramsey Pearce (Nathalie Emmanuel), and Han Lue (Sung Kang).

One of the most intriguing questions about Fast X is how it will handle the legacy of Paul Walker, who played Brian O’Conner, one of the main protagonists of the franchise. Walker tragically died in a car accident in 2013, but his character was given a respectful send-off in Furious 7, using CGI and body doubles to complete his scenes. Since then, Brian has been mentioned as still being alive and part of the family, but not seen on screen.

However, Fast X director Louis Leterrier has revealed that Brian is “very much alive” in the Fast and Furious universe. Leterrier explained that he wanted to honor Walker’s memory and legacy by keeping him involved in the story, but without showing his face or using CGI. He said that he used creative ways to include Brian’s presence, such as having him talk on the phone or drive a car off-screen. He also hinted that Brian might have a surprise appearance at some point in the film.

Leterrier said that he consulted with Walker’s family and friends, as well as Vin Diesel and other cast members, to make sure that his approach was respectful and authentic. He said that he wanted to make Fast X a tribute to Walker and his character, who is still part of the Fast family.

Some familiar faces from the past will return, such as Cipher (Charlize Theron), a cyberterrorist who manipulated Dom in The Fate of The Furious; Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham), a former British agent; Jakob Toretto (John Cena), Dom’s estranged brother who betrayed him in F9; Queenie Shaw (Helen Mirren), Deckard’s mother who helped Dom escape Cipher’s clutches.

Fast X - Brie Larson

Fast X will also introduce some new characters to the franchise such as Tess (Brie Larson), a mysterious character who is described as “the light” of Dom and his family. Her role is still secretive but some insiders have likened her to Paul Walker’s character Brian O’Conner. She is also considered as a potential successor to Walker. Tess has a strong connection to the Fast & Furious saga, which will be revealed in due time. Another new character is Dom’s grandmother (Rita Moreno), who will offer some wisdom and guidance to the Toretto clan. Expect appearances by Alan Ritchson (known for the Jack Reacher series), Michael Rooker, and Cardi B, as well.

The trailer for Fast X showcases some of the spectacular action sequences that fans can expect from the film such as a car chase on the streets of London; a desert scene reminiscent of a Mad Max movie; and more. The trailer also hints at some of the emotional moments and surprises that the film will deliver.

Fast X is the ultimate ride for fans of the Fast & Furious franchise as it celebrates the legacy and history of the series, as well as its core values of family, loyalty, and justice. It also sets the stage for the final chapter of the saga, Fast & Furious 11, which is expected to be released in 2024.

Fast X is a must-see movie for action lovers and Fast & Furious fans alike. Don’t miss it when it hits theaters on May 19th, 2023. Buckle up and enjoy the ride!
