Seattle-based indie label, Sub Pop Records, has announced this year’s Sub Pop Loser Scholarship for three high school seniors from Washington or Oregon. The label will be offering a total of $18,000 in college scholarship money, with each of the three scholarships valued at $6,000.

According to Sub Pop, the scholarship program is aimed at art-enthused misfits from the Pacific Northwest, regardless of their cultural or community background. The label is looking for graduating seniors who are interested or involved in music and creative media and arts in some way, although applicants do not necessarily need to be pursuing an education in these fields.

Sub Pop Records’ choice of the term “loser” is deeply ingrained in the label’s identity and history. According to the label, the term represents a celebration of individuality and authenticity, rejecting societal norms and expectations. For Sub Pop, being a “loser” is a crucial part of the underground art and culture scene, which thrives outside of the mainstream and resists assimilation.

As a label that has long been associated with non-conformity and rebellion, Sub Pop says it is proud to be able to offer support to students who might not fit the traditional mold. The scholarship money is intended to help further their education and encourage them to pursue their passions.

To be eligible, applicants must be residents of Washington or Oregon and on their way to full-time enrollment at an accredited university or college. The application process is now open, and Sub Pop encourages all eligible students to apply.
